King Charles Recalled 1970 US Trip With Nixon
King Charles has been reflecting on his earliest trip to the United States as the monarch continues his current visit across the Atlantic with Queen Camilla, revisiting a 1970 tour that included meetings at the White House and a packed schedule in Washington, DC.
Hello Magazine reported that Charles first travelled to the US in July 1970, aged 21, when he visited Washington with Princess Anne and was hosted by President Richard Nixon, who attempted to set him up with his daughter, Tricia.
The report said the then Prince Charles escorted Tricia Nixon to a formal dinner and joined her for sightseeing in the capital, as well as attending a baseball game. It also cited Charles recalling in a 2021 interview that the matchmaking effort was “quite amusing”.
Although the current trip marks Charles’s first time in the United States as sovereign, he has made multiple visits over the decades, including tours in the late 1970s and 1980s and official engagements during his years as Prince of Wales. BritpopNews has also previously covered the King’s present-day itinerary, including when he was reported to have received a standing ovation in Congress during the visit.
According to the article, the 1970 schedule included a visit to the Patuxent Center for Wildlife Research and other stops such as museums and Capitol Hill, as well as Camp David. It also quoted David Eisenhower describing the baseball game as not a “highlight” for Charles, citing the heat and the difficulty of explaining the sport to him at the time.
