Greta Van Fleet reacted to Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant saying he ‘hates’ them in a new Talk is Jericho podcast interview. Jimmy Page ‘Secretly’ Played On 60’s Classic.
Chris Jericho: You’ve heard it a million times before that Greta Van Fleet has this Zeppelin kind of vibe to it. Some people think that’s the death sentence, the worst thing you can do, other people like me think it’s great, there is a little bit of a Zeppelin vibe to it, but there’s a little bit of AC/DC vibe to Airborne, it doesn’t really matter, but you do have that kind of a sound, early-’70s vibe to you in a lot of different ways…
Danny Wagner: “Yeah, I always tell people if they bring it up, it’s like – how long ago was it since a band went into a studio and played in a room live to record it that way, using 100% real instruments and real takes without any budging around and everything?
“Yeah, you could probably date it back to the ’70s – no shit we sound like that.”
Josh Kiszka: “I guess there’s a certain similarity in the approach, but as far as influences go, we’re eclectic, really. Sam [Kiszka, bass], Jake [Kiszka, guitar], and I – I mean, my father had a pretty big collection of music. Vinyl, cassettes, all of that stuff- CDs.
“He kind of inherited a lot of the stuff from my grandparents, we were listening to stuff like Sinatra or Big Bands, or even as strange instrumental albums from the ’60s, crazy exotic world music, and stuff.
“Jake was really the big rock ‘n’ roll guy, that’s where he was coming from, so that’s why kind of Zeppelin or Jethro Tull, and a lot of blues stuff, like Howlin’ Wolf, that kind of stuff, and then some folk stuff, ’70s folk stuff.”
I think I read somewhere too that Robert Plant and Jimmy Page actually gave you guys a compliment or something along those lines…
Danny Wagner: “Yeah, something like that, it was sort of interview he was doing, and the interviewer asked about us, and that’s as much of a compliment – I never really watch any of that.”
Josh Kiszka: “Yeah, he’s [Plant] very sweet and made some really nice comments, but the first thing was kind of a cheeky Robert Plant humor. ‘So what do you think, there’s a bunch of new bands coming out, have you heard Greta Van Fleet? What do you think of Greta Van Fleet?’. He goes, ‘Oh, I hate them.’ [Laughs]”
