Elon Musk is in the news again because of a social media post from the FBI’s New Orleans branch. The post, which was shared in October 2024, showed FBI agents wearing friendship bracelets inspired by Taylor Swift. The bracelets were meant to be a fun way to connect with Taylor Swift’s fans, known as Swifties. But the post became a topic of controversy after a terrible event in New Orleans on New Year’s Day.
On that day, a truck drove through a crowd on Bourbon Street, killing 15 people and injuring 30 more. The authorities are investigating it as a possible terrorist attack and believe the driver might have had help. The driver, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, was an Army veteran from Texas and was shot and killed by police. Bombs were found in his vehicle, and an ISIS flag was attached to it. The FBI is investigating links to terrorist groups.
After the attack, Elon Musk criticized the FBI for focusing on pop culture, sharing a post from Senator Marsha Blackburn. Blackburn, who Taylor Swift had publicly opposed during the 2024 election, said the FBI should focus on investigating criminals and terrorists instead of making pop culture posts. Musk agreed with Blackburn and pointed out that the FBI should be taking terrorism more seriously.
This added more tension between Musk and Taylor Swift. During the 2024 election, Swift supported Kamala Harris, who was running against Donald Trump, and Musk tweeted negatively about her. Even though he later deleted the tweet, the conflict came back up with this new FBI post.
While the FBI is working on the investigation into the New Year’s Day attack, people are questioning whether it’s appropriate for the FBI to engage in pop culture trends when there are serious matters to focus on.
