Experts Say Trump ‘Set Tone’ for King Charles Visit
President Donald Trump “set the tone” as King Charles III “commanded the space” during the monarch’s White House arrival ceremony on Monday, according to royal commentators quoted as the state visit programme moved from Washington engagements to a congressional address and a state dinner. King Charles and Queen Camilla were greeted outside the White House by the President and First Lady Melania Trump before a private meeting in the Oval Office.
Royal broadcaster Ian Pelham Turner described the welcome as the President “at his very best”, adding that Mr Trump’s remarks were delivered with humour and passion and came as both countries looked for a thaw in political differences, Fox News reported.
British royals expert Ms Hilary Fordwich said the greeting included more spontaneous moments alongside the choreographed elements, and suggested the two men’s interactions appeared natural as they moved between the ceremonial welcome and their meeting. She also said Mr Trump, “confident and in command”, guided proceedings, while the King remained restrained and diplomatic.
Royal commentator Ms Meredith Constant said the arrival ceremony, including marching bands playing both national anthems, was a reminder of how closely linked the two countries are, and she argued the King appeared at ease despite Mr Trump delivering the welcome address. The appearance followed earlier coverage of Donald Trump being guided by floor markers during King Charles’s White House arrival as the event unfolded on the South Lawn.
King Charles later addressed Congress on Tuesday and held a bilateral meeting with Mr Trump before attending a state dinner hosted at the White House. The visit continues with further engagements in the United States as officials seek to reinforce the UK-US relationship during a period of heightened international tensions.
