Coldplay reached a big milestone on October 30 during their Music of the Spheres world tour in Melbourne, Australia. For the first time in their 25-year history, they played a concert without one of their four founding members, bassist Guy Berryman. They also shared a heartfelt tribute to Shane Warne.
After the show at Marvel Stadium, the band shared on Instagram that Guy got sick unexpectedly right before the concert. They thanked the audience for their support and said, “Tonight was the first time in our band’s history that we’ve played a show without all four members onstage.”
Since Guy couldn’t perform, lead singer Chris Martin, guitarist Jonny Buckland, and drummer Will Champion went on with the show. Martin told the crowd, “Thank you so much for coming. It’s a shame, but we waited until the last minute to tell you that Guy is very, very sick and can’t play today. We’ll have a different show, but we’ll do our best to make it amazing.”
He also warned the audience that there might be some “mistakes” because of Guy’s absence, joking that they only had an hour to prepare. Martin explained that their co-producer and engineer, Bill Rahko, would play bass while wearing the band’s signature space helmets.
Coldplay recently celebrated their first Billboard 200 No. 1 album in ten years. After their four shows in Melbourne, they will continue with four nights in Sydney and three nights in Auckland, New Zealand. The tour will take a break before starting up again in January with shows in the United Arab Emirates and India, finishing with ten nights at Wembley Stadium in London.
