Britney Spears’ rehab move may ease DUI penalty
Britney Spears has voluntarily entered a treatment facility in the weeks after her DUI arrest, a decision a legal expert says could be viewed favourably when she appears in court on 4 May. The singer, 44, is due before a judge in Ventura, California, roughly two months after she was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
Ahead of the court date, People reported that attorney Mr Bobby Taghavi said voluntarily seeking treatment can demonstrate “proactive accountability” and may help reduce the likelihood of jail time, although it is not guaranteed and judges still weigh the underlying facts of the case.
Mr Taghavi, a former prosecutor who is now managing partner at law firm Sweet James, told the publication the decision is unlikely to affect any driving licence suspension, which is handled separately through the DMV process. He said first-time cases commonly result in probation, fines and DUI school, with custody “technically possible” but often not central in a standard first offence.
Spears’ decision follows earlier Britpop News reporting that she entered rehab after the DUI charge, with sources close to the singer indicating she was shaken by the arrest and concerned about the possibility of jail.
The case is expected to be resolved through routine court procedures in May, with the singer’s documented participation in treatment likely to be a factor raised by her legal team if mitigation is sought.
