Blur frontman Damon Albarn recently revealed that he is currently in the process of working on an opera as well as new music for Gorillaz via NME.
Damon Albarn opens up on the matter
While appearing on the Broken Record Podcast, Albarn shared he is putting Johann Wolfgang von Goetheās 1807ās The Magic Flute Part II to music for the first time. The 1791 original was an opera in two acts to a German libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder.
āIām doing an opera at the moment, using Goetheās fragment he wrote about The Magic Flute Part II, which is fascinating,ā he said.
He continued:
āYouāve heard of Mozartās āMagic Fluteā? Well, Goethe, who is a contemporary of Mozart, wrote āPart IIā of that ā the sequel ā but it never got put to music. Itās this legendary lost thing.ā
Albarn went on to admit about feeling like an idiot when working in the world of opera.
āI donāt really know what Iām doing. I never know what Iām doing in that world, Iām a complete idiot. I donāt know if itās any good. With songs, Iām more confident about that,ā he explained.
The singer also shared that there is a new Gorillaz album in the works with a completely new sound. The decision to venture in new musical route on the follow up to 2023ās āCracker Islandā was made to keep the group āalive.ā
āItās not going to be as dramatic as a quantum shift, it will be a paradigm shift, it will be very different. It will be an entirely different approach to everything ā to the band, to everything,ā Albarn explained.
He continued:
āWeāre at a point where weāre going to change. Why? Because it was always just Jamie and I. Although it is a very big thing now, it is still, in essence, just two people. If we decided between us that we want to do something unrecognisable then we will. You need that for it to stay alive, really.ā
āBlur present: The Ballad Of Darrenā will take place at Londonās Eventim Apollo on July 25. It will be the first and only time the album will be performed in its entirety, from start to finish, and fans across the globe can tune in via a livestream of the show.
