Charli XCX has encouraged brands that send her clothing to instead donate it to those impacted by the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles. The pop singer, who gained mainstream success with her album Brat and has worked with brands like H&M and Skims, expressed on Instagram that while it’s kind to receive gifts, she believes the focus should be on helping those in need due to the fires.
The Los Angeles wildfires, which began on January 7, have caused severe damage, claiming 16 lives, displacing nearly 180,000 people, and destroying thousands of buildings. Charli XCX, using her platform, shared information about a clothing drive organized by stylist Lana Jay Lackey and urged others to donate unworn clothes to help families who lost their homes.
Many celebrities have been affected by the fires, including Paris Hilton, who watched her home burn on TV, and others like Milo Ventimiglia, Mel Gibson, and Mark Hamill. Music spaces have also been damaged, such as Bob Clearmountain’s Mix This! studio. A benefit concert called FireAid will take place on January 30 to support the rebuilding efforts and displaced families, though the lineup has not yet been announced.
