Amazon now fully owns the rights to James Bond after the original owners, Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, stepped back. With this big change, Jeff Bezos asked a big question: Who should be the next James Bond? Most fans shouted one name: Henry Cavill.
Cavill is famous for playing Superman in the DCEU, Geralt in The Witcher, and other action roles. He has the look, the charm, and the skills for Bond—unless Amazon decides to pick a younger or more diverse actor.
But does Cavill even want the role?
Being Bond is a huge commitment. The last actor, Daniel Craig, played the role for 15 years. Cavill is already working on big projects, including Amazon’s Warhammer 40,000 universe (his dream project) and a Voltron movie. But when asked about Bond last year, he didn’t say no:
“I don’t know. Maybe I’m too old now, maybe not. It’s up to the producers.”
Now that Amazon is in charge—and already working with Cavill—his chances seem high. At 41 years old, he’s older than Daniel Craig was when he started (Casino Royale was filmed when Craig was 37). If Cavill played Bond for 15 years, he’d be 56—still reasonable.
Other actors being considered include Aaron Taylor-Johnson (34) and Taron Egerton (35). But Cavill has a strong connection to the role. He auditioned for Bond before Casino Royale, but was considered too young at the time. Director Martin Campbell said:
“He looked great. His acting was amazing. If Daniel Craig wasn’t there, Henry would have been a perfect Bond.”
Now, nearly 20 years later, Cavill might finally get his chance. If Amazon wants a big-name star who fits the role, he’s the best choice.
