Prince Harry’s Frogmore Cottage Still Sits Empty
Frogmore Cottage, the former UK base of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, remains unoccupied years after the couple left Britain and relocated to California. The five-bedroom property at Windsor was used during their UK visits for major family occasions after they stepped back from royal duties in 2020, but the arrangement ended when they were asked to give up the home in 2023.
Express.co.uk reported that one reason the house may be harder to reassign is the scale of the £2.4 million refurbishment carried out before the Duke and Duchess of Sussex moved in, including structural work and upgrades such as a heat pump, with the couple later reimbursing the cost.
The report notes that, despite periodic speculation about the property being offered to another royal, no move has been confirmed. It adds that Frogmore was at one stage discussed as a possible option for the Prince and Princess of Wales, though it was said to be too small for their family’s needs.
Prince Harry has previously described a strong attachment to Frogmore in his memoir, writing: “Frogmore was ready. We loved that place. From the first minute. It felt as if we were destined to live there.” In the same passage, he recalled daily walks around the grounds and time spent in the gardens, including checking in on resident swans and meeting the late Queen Elizabeth II’s gardeners.
With the property still empty, the question of its future use remains unresolved, particularly given the potential cost and complexity of reversing or significantly altering the Sussexes-era changes if a new occupant’s requirements differ.
