Masked man incident near Prince Andrew’s home renews security debate
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was left “shaken” after a masked man allegedly confronted him while he was walking his dogs near his home in Norfolk, with the incident prompting renewed discussion about what level of protection the former working royal should receive.
Norfolk Police said they arrested Alex Jenkinson, 39, after reports that a man was behaving in an intimidating manner in a village, adding he was detained on suspicion of a public order offence and possession of an offensive weapon; Fox News reported that Jenkinson has since been charged with two counts of using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour to harass someone or cause alarm or distress, as well as failing to provide a specimen of blood in custody.
The report said Jenkinson is accused of approaching Andrew while wearing a mask and shouting abuse, and that he pleaded not guilty in court on May 8. Fox News Digital quoted broadcaster Ms Helena Chard as saying the incident had “reopened the discussion” around security, while also noting claims that King Charles is understood to partly fund private protection at Andrew’s Norfolk property.
Royal expert Ms Hilary Fordwich told Fox News Digital she would not expect Andrew to receive increased protection, while Ms Chard said reinstating armed Metropolitan Police protection would likely trigger backlash. The dispute over security arrangements has also been raised in UK coverage, including reporting that a man accused of threatening behaviour toward Prince Andrew has denied the allegation.
The incident comes as Andrew’s status remains under scrutiny following his stepping back from royal duties in 2019 and subsequent controversy linked to Jeffrey Epstein. With the suspect now facing charges, attention is likely to remain on court proceedings and on how the Royal Family manages safety arrangements for non-working members.
