Queen Elizabeth Urged Harry to Wait
Queen Elizabeth II advised Prince Harry to slow down his relationship with Ms Meghan Markle before their 2018 wedding, according to a new royal biography. The claim revisits the period leading up to the couple’s engagement and marriage, at a time when Meghan had begun joining the Royal Family for key public and private occasions.
Express reported that royal biographer Mr Hugo Vickers wrote the late Queen suggested Prince Harry should wait a year before marrying, but he did not take the advice and the wedding went ahead just over six months after the engagement.
The book also alleges the monarch had reservations about aspects of the Windsor Castle ceremony, including claims she disliked Meghan’s wedding dress and held an “ambivalent” attitude about the event. Mr Vickers further writes that Prince Philip referred to Meghan “dryly” as “the American”, while Prince William privately urged his brother to take more time to get to know her, a difference of view said to have contributed to tensions between the brothers.
The biography’s account comes as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex continue to face persistent scrutiny over their relationship and public roles, with Britpop News recently reporting that divorce rumours were reportedly dismissed amid ongoing commentary about the couple’s future.
Prince Harry and Ms Meghan Markle married at Windsor Castle in May 2018 and later stepped back from senior royal duties in 2020. The renewed focus on the late Queen’s reported comments underlines how the lead-up to the wedding remains a significant flashpoint in narratives about the Sussexes and their relationship with the wider Royal Family.
