Prince Harry and Meghan criticised over Australia trip
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have faced renewed criticism over their four-day visit to Australia, with commentators arguing the trip blended charitable appearances with commercial activity at paid events in Sydney and Melbourne.
In an article about claims the visit was a “trash for cash” tour, Express reported that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex attended engagements including a children’s hospital visit, but also appeared at ticketed events, including a “girls’ weekend” retreat in Sydney costing £1,400 per ticket, with VIP packages priced higher and including a group photo.
The report cited remarks made on The Sun’s Royal Exclusive podcast, including commentator Ms Samara Gill describing the trip as “all for them”, while royal biographer Mr Robert Jobson referenced the late Queen’s position that the couple could not be “half in and half out” of royal life.
It also follows earlier criticism during the visit, including coverage of backlash over Meghan’s brief appearance at a Sydney retreat where tickets were reported to cost thousands.
Harry and Meghan’s office rejected suggestions the programme was focused on publicity, saying the schedule prioritised “listening, learning and supporting communities” and that the visit was privately funded, though the report noted public complaints in Australia about additional police security costs.
