Prince Harry speaks about feeling ‘disconnection’ after Archie’s birth
Prince Harry has spoken candidly about the challenges of early fatherhood, describing a sense of “disconnection” in the days after the birth of his son, Prince Archie, during a stage discussion in Melbourne.
During a solo visit to a men’s mental health charity on the second day of the Sussexes’ Australia tour, the Duke of Sussex said he struggled to understand what role he could play immediately after the birth. Hello Magazine reported that he told the audience: “Certainly, I felt a disconnection because my wife was the one creating life, and I was there to witness it.”
The Duke continued by describing the uncertainty some fathers experience in the early weeks, adding: “And I think for many guys, you try to think about what service can I provide at this point, because my work here is done to some extent.” He also said those “days, weeks, after birth are a real struggle,” and encouraged men to be aware of their emotions once a baby is born.
Prince Harry’s remarks came as he and Meghan Markle undertake a short series of engagements in the country, following a schedule that includes charitable and public appearances as part of their planned four-day Australia trip.
In the same discussion, the Duke said his approach to parenting has evolved and described children as an “upgrade” in terms of preparing the next generation for a rapidly changing world. He also reflected on working from home before and during the Covid-19 pandemic, saying the reality can shift when young children are present.
The comments added a personal note to the Duke’s Australia programme and aligned with his long-running focus on mental health, with his Melbourne appearance placing fatherhood and emotional wellbeing at the centre of the conversation.
