Meghan Markle reportedly steps back from memoir plans
Meghan Markle has reportedly shelved plans to write a memoir, despite what an insider described as strong interest from publishers following the success of Prince Harry’s autobiography, Spare. The claims suggest the Duchess of Sussex is choosing not to pursue a personal book project as she and the Duke of Sussex seek to avoid further controversy involving the Royal Family.
Express reported that a source said Meghan had been presented with “numerous lucrative publishing deals” but decided against moving ahead, with the insider claiming the couple are cautious about what they do and say in order to “uphold the standards of the monarchy”.
The report also references how Spare, released in January 2023, became one of the fastest-selling non-fiction titles while attracting criticism over several revelations, including Prince Harry’s account of a reported physical altercation with Prince William and details from his military service in Afghanistan.
The alleged shift comes as the Sussexes continue to balance commercial projects with reputational sensitivities, with recent Britpop News coverage noting how Meghan Markle’s Netflix setback sparked questions about future plans after the couple’s media output faced increased scrutiny.
In the same reporting, a source claimed the Sussexes’ approach can affect commercial partnerships, suggesting that constraints and the desire for creative control may limit what they are willing to sign off. The report also alleges the couple requested certain photographs be removed after attending Ms Kris Jenner’s 70th birthday celebrations last year.
Meghan previously published the children’s book The Bench in 2021, which reached The New York Times bestseller list in the picture book category. Any decision to pause memoir plans would leave the focus on the couple’s other ventures as they continue to define their post-royal public roles.
