Prince Harry says privacy battle came at ‘personal cost’
Prince Harry has said he has faced a lack of privacy “from birth” and described the personal impact his legal battles with parts of the British press have had on his family, as he addressed an international summit in Washington DC. The Duke of Sussex spoke about privacy, technology and accountability while reflecting on years of litigation and the wider risks posed by data misuse and artificial intelligence.
At the IAPP global summit on privacy, AI governance and cybersecurity law, Birmingham Live reported that the Duke told delegates his ongoing UK lawsuits had come with a “personal and reputational cost” for Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
In his keynote, the Duke said exploitation of private information had become “normalised” and argued that breaches of privacy were being used as commercial tactics across industries, pointing to social media platforms and the rapid development of AI. He said he had spent years pursuing claims against three UK media organisations over what he described as systemic unlawful invasions of privacy dating back to the early 2000s, and questioned how children’s data and personal identity would be protected in the future.
The remarks came as he and other claimants including Baroness Doreen Lawrence and Sir Elton John await the High Court’s decision in their case against the Daily Mail’s publisher, Associated Newspapers Limited, which denies wrongdoing. Prince Harry’s long-running dispute with the press has also fed into wider royal tensions, including claims that his outreach efforts with the Royal Family have faltered in recent months.
Prince Harry said his campaign was about systems that shape society, not just one individual, and warned that emerging technologies could amplify harm if privacy and safety were not designed in from the start. The Duke has previously backed initiatives aimed at supporting families affected by harmful online content, as he continues to frame his legal fight as part of a broader push for accountability.
