SNL UK Sketch Jokes About Harry and Meghan
Saturday Night Live UK has drawn attention for a new sketch that made Prince Harry and Meghan Markle the target of a joke about how divisive the couple remain in Britain. The segment aired on 28 March as the comedy spin-off’s opening sketch of the night and was billed online as a “creepy” take on royal intrigue.
In the sketch, cast member Hammed Animashaun quipped that Prince Harry was “going to marry a woman 98 per cent of the UK public will find it impossible to have a normal conversation about”, Hello Magazine reported.
The joke appeared in a wider storyline that imagined MI5 agents meeting with Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, played by Jack Shep, as they discussed a long-term plan to boost King Charles’s popularity by making other royals less likeable. The sketch also referenced Prince William and Sarah Ferguson while largely focusing on jokes connected to Prince Andrew’s links to Jeffrey Epstein.
The show’s focus on Prince Andrew comes as the royal’s reputation continues to be scrutinised in the media, including claims in which Prince Andrew was alleged to have called Meghan Markle an “opportunist” in an exchange reported in connection with a forthcoming book.
Online reaction to the SNL UK segment was mixed, with some viewers praising the writers for an “edgy” sketch while others criticised the tone and details of the royal references. The controversy is likely to keep the new series in the spotlight as it continues its debut run.
