Harry and Meghan Hit Back at Tom Bower
Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, have issued a sharp public response to extracts from an upcoming royal biography by author Mr Tom Bower, accusing him of peddling “deranged conspiracy and melodrama” and arguing his commentary has moved beyond legitimate criticism.
The couple’s spokesperson said in a statement that Mr Bower had “long crossed the line from criticism into fixation”, after extracts published in BBC News set out claims in the book that Queen Camilla told a friend Meghan had “brainwashed” Prince Harry and that Meghan was viewed by Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales as a “threat”.
In their statement, the Sussexes also pointed to a remark they said Mr Bower had previously made about “obliterating the Sussexes”, adding: “Those interested in facts will look elsewhere; those seeking deranged conspiracy and melodrama know exactly where to find him.” The extracts, they said, were an example of “elaborate theories about people he does not know and has never met.”
The new book, titled Betrayal: Power, Deceit And The Fight For The Future Of The Royal Family, revisits tensions around the Sussexes’ relationship with the Prince and Princess of Wales before Harry and Meghan stepped back as working royals and moved to the United States in 2020. It also discusses their commercial and charitable activity since then, including the couple’s media deals and coverage of Prince Harry’s Invictus Games.
Mr Bower previously wrote Revenge: Meghan, Harry, And the War Between the Windsors, published in 2022. Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace have not commented on the claims referenced in the new extracts.
