Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s nanny coined “Baby Grumpling” nickname
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was given an unflattering childhood nickname by his nanny, according to a new account revisiting his early years within the royal household. The claim, which links the moniker to his behaviour as a young child, resurfaces amid ongoing public interest in the former Duke of York’s place in the family.
Hello Magazine reported that nanny Mabel Anderson called him “Baby Grumpling” because of his temper tantrums and what was described as an obstinate personality.
The report attributes the detail to author Mr Nigel Cawthorne, who wrote that Anderson also occasionally referred to Andrew as “the young imp” while describing various childhood pranks, including removing valves from a radio and tying sentries’ shoelaces together. The same account says the late Queen Elizabeth II once remarked that he was “not always a little ray of sunshine about the home” after an incident that disrupted her television viewing.
The reference to Anderson comes as royal watchers continue to follow developments around Andrew’s status, a subject Britpop News has covered in fresh scrutiny over Prince Andrew developments in recent weeks.
The renewed attention underlines how stories from Andrew’s early life are being revisited alongside broader questions about his standing and future role, with historical accounts now forming part of the public narrative around the royal family.
