King Charles Praises Commonwealth Olympic Medallists
King Charles III has issued a message of congratulations to Winter Olympic medal winners from across the Commonwealth as the Games came to a close in Italy. The King’s statement, shared on the royal family’s social media channels on Sunday night, also praised athletes who did not reach the podium and looked ahead to the upcoming Winter Paralympics.
In his message, the monarch said he and Queen Camilla were sending “most heartfelt congratulations” to medal winners from Team GB, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, adding that the athletes showed “exceptional skill” as well as “grace and camaraderie” that captured the Olympic spirit, Hello Magazine reported.
King Charles also paid tribute to those who did not medal, saying competitors could return home “with proud hearts and heads held high” after performances he described as a testament to “courage, commitment and awesome athleticism”, and he thanked support teams working both on the ground and at home.
The statement came days after the King addressed the arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, and it follows his earlier remarks that the law “must take its course” as the matter is investigated by the appropriate authorities.
Concluding his message, the King expressed gratitude to Italy for hosting the Winter Games and said the athletes’ collective achievements had “dazzled and inspired” audiences worldwide, as attention turns to the Winter Paralympics in the coming weeks.
