Meghan Markle National Anthem claim questioned again
Meghan Markle’s account of having to “Google” the British National Anthem while adjusting to royal life has been challenged again after a clip from her 2021 interview with Ms Oprah Winfrey resurfaced online. The comments, made during the televised sit-down with Winfrey following the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s departure from royal duties, have prompted renewed debate about what support she received after joining the Royal Family.
In the interview, Meghan told Winfrey she felt she had to learn aspects of royal life independently and said she searched online for the anthem and hymns to avoid embarrassing the family; Express reported that she said: “That’s me late at night Googling what’s the National Anthem… I need to learn these three hymns for church, all of this is televised.”
The Express report said social media users questioned the plausibility of the claim, with some arguing it would not take long to learn the anthem and that hymn words would typically be provided in a service booklet. Others also pointed to Meghan’s acting background as they discussed the account shared in the interview.
The renewed scrutiny comes amid ongoing online debate about the Sussexes’ portrayal of their early experiences, including commentary on claims about Meghan’s behind-the-scenes working relationships as the couple continue to pursue media and commercial projects outside the Royal Family.
Neither Meghan nor representatives for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have publicly responded to the latest resurfaced clip, which has circulated widely in recent days and revived discussion about the period leading up to their move away from royal life.
