Former NFL star Tom Brady, who is now a co-owner of Birmingham City, is close to helping the club complete a major signing.
Reports from Germany say Birmingham City are nearing a deal for Kai Wagner, a left-back who had also been linked with Inter Miami, the MLS team associated with David Beckham. The transfer is believed to be worth around €2.3 million, with Wagner expected to move to England instead of staying in Major League Soccer.
Wagner, 28, spent seven seasons with the Philadelphia Union, where he became one of the league’s most reliable defenders. He played a key role in the Union’s Supporters’ Shield wins in 2020 and 2025 and recorded 53 assists and 10 goals in 153 matches. His attacking output and consistency earned him three MLS All-Star selections.
Inter Miami were interested in Wagner, but they have since strengthened the position with other signings. Wagner is already in England, suggesting the Birmingham City move could be finalized soon.
Since Brady joined Birmingham City’s ownership group, the club has taken a more ambitious approach in the transfer market. Their long-term goal is promotion to the Premier League, and signing experienced players like Wagner fits that plan.
