Selwyn Township Moves to Rename Prince Andrew Islands
An Ontario township has voted unanimously to begin renaming two islands that currently honour Prince Andrew. Selwyn Township, near Peterborough, is set to start the formal process for changing the names of Prince Andrew Island and Gordonstoun Island, with Mayor Ms Sherry Senis saying the move is “the right thing to do” in light of sexual assault allegations against the Duke of York.
Toronto Life reported that Selwyn plans to submit an application to the Ontario Geographic Names Board after the council vote agreed to begin the renaming process for both islands.
According to the report, Gordonstoun Island was named for Gordonstoun School in Scotland, attended by Prince Andrew as well as King Charles III and their father, Prince Philip. The piece also notes that Prince Andrew Island received its name in 1978, shortly after the Duke spent a semester at Lakefield College in the area.
The decision comes as scrutiny of the Duke continues, with Britpop News previously reporting claims that Prince Andrew was ordered to give up a Windsor cottage amid wider questions about his future arrangements.
Selwyn’s application to the provincial naming board is expected to be the next step in determining any new names and formalising the changes on official records and maps.
