Prince William Quote Recalled After 2007 Split
A new account of the Prince and Princess of Wales’ early relationship has revisited the brief 2007 split between Prince William and Catherine, then known as Kate Middleton, and a remark he is said to have made in the immediate aftermath. The claim, drawn from a recent biography, sheds light on how William viewed the pressures surrounding his future as heir and the expectations placed on any long-term partner.
Hello Magazine reported that a new book by royal editor Mr Russell Myers claims William told a senior courtier “At least she is free” after he made the decision to end the relationship in 2007.
The book, titled William and Catherine: The Intimate Inside Story, says William initiated the split after the couple’s relationship—which began at the University of St Andrews and became public in 2004—hit a difficult period. According to the reporting, the remark was interpreted as a reference to the intense expectations attached to William’s role and the scrutiny that would come with being his wife, as the future Queen.
The couple reconciled later in 2007 and went on to marry at Westminster Abbey in 2011, later becoming parents to Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. In more recent years, Britpop News has also reported on William and Catherine’s efforts to handle attention around their private lives, including when Prince William warned the press over treatment of Catherine during heightened public scrutiny.
The biography’s recollection adds to the long-running public interest in how the couple navigated their formative years, while underlining the distinct pressures that can shape relationships at the centre of the royal institution.
