William and Kate Recalled Brief St Andrews Split
Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales have previously spoken about a brief break-up during their time at the University of St Andrews, saying the period apart helped them grow up and ultimately strengthened their relationship. The comments were made during the couple’s engagement interview, in which they reflected on being young students when their romance faced its first major test.
In their engagement interview, Liverpool Echo reported that Prince William said the pair “did split up for a bit,” describing it as “a bit of space” while they were “finding ourselves,” and adding: “It worked out for the better.”
Catherine said she was unhappy at the time but later felt the break made her “a stronger person”, explaining that she valued the time to learn more about herself and avoid becoming “consumed by a relationship” when younger. The couple later reconciled and continued their relationship, before marrying at Westminster Abbey on 29 April 2011.
Their university years have remained a touchstone in public interest around the Waleses’ early relationship, alongside later accounts of how Prince William has sought to set his own tone in public life, including discussion around Prince William’s “quiet faith” and how it is perceived in royal circles.
William and Catherine, who share three children, have rarely offered detailed personal reflections beyond their engagement interview, but the remarks continue to be cited as an example of how the couple navigated pressures early on before becoming senior working royals.
