William and Kate were nearly barred from living together at St Andrews, landlady recalled
Prince William and Princess Catherine’s early university years have resurfaced in a new report claiming the couple were close to being prevented from living together while studying at the University of St Andrews. The account comes as the Prince and Princess of Wales approach their 15th wedding anniversary in April, highlighting a moment from their second year in Scotland when they moved into a rented property with friends.
Express reported that the landlady of the rented home initially did not want male tenants after a previous group of young men caused damage including broken furniture and windows. The report said Princess Catherine spoke to the landlady and persuaded her to reconsider when the owner was told that one of the prospective tenants was Prince William.
According to the report, the couple lived in the rented house with two other students during their second year at St Andrews as their friendship developed into a relationship. The landlady, Charlotte Smith, was quoted as saying she had been reluctant to take on “more boys” at the property until learning that Prince William would be among the tenants.
The couple later moved out after their second year and found another home for their final two years at university, with the report stating they relocated to Balgove House on the Strathtyrum estate. In more recent public appearances in Scotland, the Princess has drawn attention for her style choices, including when she ran in heels during a visit north of the border.
Prince William and Princess Catherine married in 2011 after their relationship began at St Andrews, where their student years continue to attract interest whenever milestones such as their anniversary come around.
