Prince William and Princess Kate stay silent after BAFTAs heckle
Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales were reportedly confronted by a shouted question about the monarchy as they walked the red carpet at the 2026 EE BAFTA Film Awards in London, making their first joint public appearance since the arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. The couple attended the ceremony at the Royal Festival Hall on Sunday, where Prince William appeared in his role as BAFTA president.
During the red carpet walk, Hello Magazine reported that the Prince and Princess were asked, “Is the monarchy in peril?”, citing People Magazine, and that they did not respond.
The report said the couple continued to smile and chat as they greeted photographers and guests, with the Princess returning to the awards for the first time in three years following cancer treatment and a recent announcement that she is now in remission.
The moment came amid continuing fallout from Andrew’s arrest, with the Palace maintaining that senior royals will continue with their programme of duties, and with previous coverage noting Prince William’s measured public response when the subject has surfaced in broadcast interviews.
Prince William and the Princess of Wales did not comment further during the appearance, and the pair were expected to continue their official engagements in the coming days as the investigation involving Andrew proceeds.
