Former Oasis rocker Noel Gallagher recently talked about his early days learning guitar.
He recently joined in for an interview with Gibson TV where he shed some light into the first steps he took early into his career.
Noel recalled Oasis first gig and how unprepared he was, saying only 24 hours before the show did he realize that he’d never “played guitar standing up”. He was forced to borrow a strap and spend some time in the mirror to adjust his rockstar pose, the musician did pull through in the end, although he guaranteed it was a very “stressful” day.
Now, Gallagher discussed his learning methods, revealing that, unlike most guitar players, he didn’t start by learning his favorite songs on the instrument, instead carving his path from the beginning (via Guitar.com):
“I realised that I’m actually not very good at playing the guitar – so one of my first thoughts was, ‘I’m not very good at playing other people’s songs.’
“From quite early on, I started to do my own thing really. I wouldn’t call it songwriting. I started to do my own thing. All of it sounded like ‘House of the Rising Sun’, with the [chords] in a different order.
“I was thinking about this today, I was thinking, it was quite an early thought. It’s like, ‘I’m not interested in other people’s songs, because I’m not that good at it. I haven’t got the patience. I’ll do my own. That’ll be easier’. So that was quite an early decision to set off on my own path, really.”
