Noel Gallagher-signed ‘Wonderwall’ guitar set for Sotheby’s sale
A guitar signed and played by Noel Gallagher during the recording of Oasis’s era-defining album (What’s the Story) Morning Glory is set to go under the hammer at Sotheby’s in New York. The Epiphone EJ-200 acoustic, linked to tracks including “Wonderwall” and “Champagne Supernova”, is being offered with a five-figure estimate, adding to a growing market for Britpop memorabilia.
The instrument is expected to sell for about £59,500 at the New York auction, BBC News reported, noting it was used by Mr Gallagher during sessions for the band’s second studio album released in 1995.
The auction listing also includes a handwritten lyric sheet for “Don’t Look Back in Anger”, which is predicted to fetch around £29,750. The sale is part of a wider music-focused auction that also features items linked to artists including Elvis Presley, Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie and Keith Moon, according to the auction house.
Interest in Oasis artefacts has remained high amid renewed attention on the band’s legacy, after Mr Gallagher spoke publicly about Oasis’s future in recent coverage.
Sotheby’s has not disclosed who is consigning the guitar, but its estimate places the item among the more valuable pieces of recent Britpop memorabilia to reach the auction circuit. The sale is expected to draw bidders from both music collecting and wider pop-culture markets.
