Miley Cyrus recently talked about a moment from her past that she still remembers clearly. She lost a big movie role because of a joke involving a cake shaped like a penis.
On Monica Lewinsky’s podcast, the 32-year-old singer explained that she was fired from the animated movie Hotel Transylvania when she was 18. She was supposed to be the voice of Mavis Dracula, the lead character. But after a photo came out showing her holding a penis cake for her then-boyfriend Liam Hemsworth’s birthday, she was removed from the movie.
Sony replaced her with Selena Gomez, who ended up voicing Mavis alongside actors like Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg when the movie came out in 2012.
Miley said she felt it was unfair to lose the job over something meant as a silly and private joke. She pointed out that these kinds of cakes are common at bachelorette parties and not seen as a big deal. She also explained that the photo wasn’t something she posted herself. It got out after her backpack and camera were stolen at a private party.
Even though she was working on a kids’ movie, she said she wasn’t a kid anymore and didn’t feel like she had done anything wrong for her age. But at the time, she was trying to move away from her Disney Channel image, and the studio didn’t think she was the right fit for a family movie.
Miley said the whole thing really upset her. She even jumped into a pool and told her team she wouldn’t come out until they got her job back. That’s when her lawyer and manager realized how much it was hurting her. She later started seeing a therapist that same year to help her deal with tough moments like this.
Even though it happened years ago, the story shows how hard it was for Miley to move from being a child star to an adult artist. A small joke from her personal life ended up costing her a major role.
