Miley Cyrus is opening up about how her relationship with her parents has changed, especially now that she’s reconnected with her dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, after being distant for years.
In a new interview with the New York Times, Miley said she’s starting to see her parents more as people than just as “mom and dad.” She explained that her mom, Tish, loved Billy Ray for a long time, and being married to someone in the music business without being part of it herself was probably very difficult for her.
Miley also admitted she took on some of her mom’s emotional pain, even when it wasn’t really her own. She said it hurt her because it hurt her mom.
After Tish and Billy Ray divorced in 2022 following 30 years of marriage, both moved on to new relationships. Tish is now married to actor Dominic Purcell, and Billy Ray is with singer Firerose. Miley says she supports both of them individually and no longer sees them as just a couple, which helps her love them both in a healthier way.
Even though her family drama has played out publicly over the years, Miley isn’t too bothered. She said she’s used to how fast the world moves now, unlike in the ’90s when a tabloid story would drag on forever. These days, scandals come and go quickly.
For Miley, dealing with a little public gossip is worth it in exchange for the life she’s built and the freedom to be herself.
