Miley Cyrus has been sober for five years after giving up alcohol and marijuana because she “isn’t a moderation person.” She says it’s not drinking itself that bothered her but the poor choices she made once she drank too much. Sobriety has become central to her life , she calls it something she needs and that it’s changed everything.
A big part of her recovery is finding simple, grounding activities. Miley loves gardening and says putting a seed in the ground and caring for it has been “medicine” for her. Gardening gives her a personal, non-fame creative outlet ,she shared a story about throwing seeds on a hillside before a tour and returning to find a “princess fairy garden.” That sense of small, steady growth helps her stay centered.
“A big part of what we do is sharing. Something I love is gardening – actually, I’m making sure my dog isn’t digging mine up at this exact moment.
Gardening is something you do for yourself,” she continued. “When we’ve shared so much of ourselves, having those little precious times with something simple – like putting a seed in the ground and nurturing it – it becomes a very personal process. Having that has been the medicine that’s kept me grounded in my sober lifestyle.”
She also talked about briefly drinking again during the 2020 lockdown, saying she needed that fall to get to where she is now. Writing the song “Flowers” played a key role in her healing. Overall, Miley credits practices like nature, hands-on work, and creative routine (similar to yoga) for keeping her sober and grounded.
