Meghan Markle shares Prince Harry Afghanistan photo after Trump’s Nato remarks spark row
Meghan Markle has shared images of Prince Harry serving in Afghanistan, posting them to her Instagram story as a fresh political row flared over remarks by Donald Trump about Nato allies’ role in the conflict. The post came on Friday, hours after the Duke of Sussex publicly defended British troops and spoke about losing friends during his deployments.
The Daily Mail reported that the Duchess of Sussex uploaded a photo showing Prince Harry seated at the front of a military helicopter, alongside additional images linked to the Invictus Games, the sports event he founded in 2014 for wounded and injured service personnel.
The Daily Mail said the images were posted shortly after Prince Harry condemned comments attributed to Mr Trump, who had suggested Nato troops “stayed a little off the frontlines” in Afghanistan. In response, the Duke said he served in Afghanistan, made “lifelong friends” there and “lost friends” there, adding that the sacrifices of those who served “deserve to be spoken about truthfully and with respect”.
Prince Harry, known during his military career as “Captain Wales”, was deployed to Afghanistan in 2007 and returned in 2012. In the report, the Daily Mail said he flew an Apache helicopter during his second tour and later wrote in his memoir that he flew missions which resulted in the taking of lives.
The latest exchange comes as questions about the couple’s relationship with the UK continue to surface, including discussion around what security arrangements would be required for Meghan Markle in Britain.
With political figures and veterans also criticising Mr Trump’s remarks, the Duchess’s post is likely to keep attention on Prince Harry’s military service and the wider debate about how allied troops’ sacrifices are portrayed.
