Many people have asked about Meghan Markle’s life, but thinking she married into billions is a new question. The Duchess of Sussex was reportedly surprised when she found out that Prince Harry, her husband, is not a billionaire but a humble millionaire.
Since Meghan left the U.S. to marry Prince Harry, the younger brother of the future king, people have watched her life very closely.
A royal expert, Tom Quinn, wrote in his book Yes, Ma’am: The Secret Life of Royal Servants that Meghan was shocked to learn that Harry’s money was much less than she thought. Even though Meghan gave up her successful acting career to move to the UK, she didn’t expect this.
Quinn said Meghan thought Harry would be worth billions, but he is actually worth about £20 million. This made her rethink what she expected from joining the royal family.
Also, Meghan was surprised to find out that, unlike her ex-husband Trevor Engelson, who married a very rich heiress, she would not live in big royal palaces like Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle.
Instead, Meghan and Harry lived in a small house called Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace. They didn’t have live-in staff to help them. The Daily Mail reported that Meghan had about $5 million when she married Harry.
Meghan was unhappy about living in such a small place and felt it was unfair to Harry, especially since Prince William and Kate Middleton lived in bigger homes.
A palace worker said Meghan’s problems started because she felt this small house showed how the royal family didn’t value Harry as much.
Meghan also realized that Harry’s role as “the spare” , the younger brother, not the main heir, was more important than she thought. She saw that Harry was not as important as William in royal matters, which made her feel upset.
Before marriage, Harry hadn’t thought much about being the spare, but Meghan became sensitive about it and believed he was being treated as less important.
