Luigi Mangione, who is currently being held at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center, has found an unusual way to pass the time in prison by listening to Taylor Swift and Charli XCX.
In a fan letter that recently surfaced online, which has been confirmed as authentic, Luigi explained that he downloaded their music onto his prison tablet. He admitted he had never really listened to either artist before but decided to give their songs a try after a fake list of his “favorite artists” spread across social media.
He wrote that he was walking laps in his unit while listening to Taylor Swift’s Cardigan when another inmate, known as “King,” noticed. According to Luigi, King wasn’t impressed with his music taste and made fun of him for it. After that, King changed up Luigi’s playlist, introducing him to rapper Lil Durk — music that Luigi says he’s now listening to instead.
Luigi also mentioned being thankful for the small comforts he has behind bars, like the meals served and letters he receives from fans.
Mangione is facing serious charges in both state and federal court for allegedly murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Midtown Manhattan on December 4, 2024. In the federal case, he could face the death penalty if convicted of murder with a firearm.
