Former President Donald Trump expressed support for the idea of the United States joining the British Commonwealth after reports suggested that King Charles III might extend an invitation. King Charles III also allegedly fears near fatal poisoning.
“I love King Charles,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Friday, linking to a report from the Daily Mail claiming the British monarch would offer the U.S. associate membership during Trump’s upcoming state visit. “Sounds good to me!”
The British Commonwealth, established in 1926, is a voluntary association of 56 nations, including Australia and Canada, many of which were former British colonies. The reigning monarch serves as the symbolic head, a role Queen Elizabeth II prioritized throughout her reign.
Although the U.S. was part of the British Empire before gaining independence, the concept of Commonwealth membership was reportedly discussed during Trump’s first term. Advocates believe such a move could strengthen U.S.-U.K. ties and ease trade tensions with Canada.
“This is being discussed at the highest levels,” a Royal Commonwealth Society member told The Daily Mail. “Donald Trump has great respect for the royal family and sees the benefits of this. Associate membership could, in time, lead to full membership, further elevating the Commonwealth’s global influence.”
Trump has spoken warmly about the late Queen Elizabeth II, describing her as “great” and “flawless” during a 2023 interview. He has also praised King Charles and Prince William, whom he met in Paris last December. However, his views on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been less favorable.
The former president is set to meet King Charles during a rare second state visit later this year. His first visit in 2019 included meetings with both the late queen and then-Prince Charles.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer personally delivered King Charles’ invitation to Trump at the White House in February.
“This symbolizes the strength of the relationship between our nations,” Starmer said. “His Majesty wants to make this state visit even better than the last one.”
Trump accepted the invitation, responding, “On behalf of our wonderful First Lady Melania and myself, the answer is yes. We look forward to being there, honoring the king, and celebrating your fantastic country.”
