President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump will travel to the United Kingdom this September to meet with King Charles III. Buckingham Palace announced on Sunday that the official visit will take place from September 17 to 19, with King Charles hosting them at Windsor Castle. No other details were shared about the trip.
Unlike French President Emmanuel Macron, who recently spoke to Parliament during his visit, Trump probably will not do the same. That is because the UK Parliament will not be in session from September 16 to October 13 due to party conferences, according to Sky News.
This will be the second time Trump and Melania have been welcomed by the British royal family. Back in December 2019, they met with the late Queen Elizabeth II, King Charles who was then Prince of Wales, and Camilla at Clarence House. That visit led to large protests across London, and the city’s mayor Sadiq Khan criticized Trump in a video before he arrived.
The timing of this new trip is also interesting. It comes only a few months after Trump threatened to make Canada the 51st US state. Canada also recognizes King Charles as its head of state. In May, King Charles spoke to Canada’s Parliament and called it a critical time for the country. He highlighted how important democracy, pluralism, the rule of law, self-determination, and freedom are to Canadians and their government.
Meanwhile, Trump has kept up his efforts to change trade deals. In May, he praised a new agreement with Britain, calling it a maxed out deal that could serve as a model for deals with other countries. Still, this deal keeps a 10 percent base tariff, showing Trump’s ongoing tough trade policies with many nations.
