Free Britney activists back Spears after DUI arrest
The Free Britney movement has issued a public statement defending Ms Britney Spears after her recent arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence, arguing the incident should not be used to justify any renewed push for conservatorship. The statement, shared by FreeBritneyLA, comes as the pop star faces renewed public scrutiny while authorities await test results connected to the case.
Yahoo Entertainment reported that the statement was co-signed by activists Mr Kevin Wu, Ms Leanne Simmons and Ms Meg Radford, and stressed that “a DUI is not grounds for conservatorship” while calling for support and care to be provided on Ms Spears’ own terms.
In the same message, the group said it was common for people who have experienced prolonged control and trauma to need support while also struggling to accept it, adding that those realities could “coexist without justifying a return to the very structures that harmed her”. The activists also pointed to legal safeguards adopted in California aimed at preventing conservatorship abuse, saying their advocacy helped strengthen protections.
The development follows ongoing reporting around the case, including Britpop News coverage that Ms Spears was accused of erratic high-speed driving before being arrested on 4 March. She was released the next morning, and the report said officials were awaiting results from a blood test taken at a hospital while she was in custody.
Ms Spears, 44, previously spent 13 years under a conservatorship overseen by her father, Jamie Spears, which ended in 2021. The Free Britney statement concluded by saying the group hoped she received whatever support she may need “on her own terms”, and that those around her would respect her freedom and autonomy.
