Bruno Mars Blocks Justin Bieber From Pop Airplay No. 1
Justin Bieber has moved within touching distance of another US radio milestone, but he is still waiting on a record-tying chart-topper. On the latest Pop Airplay chart—Billboard’s ranking of the most-played songs on top 40 radio—Bieber’s “Yukon” rose to No. 2, held off the summit by Bruno Mars.
Forbes reported that Mars’s “I Just Might” remained at No. 1 for a third week, blocking Bieber from a potential historic new leader on the Pop Airplay tally.
In the same report, music writer Mr Hugh McIntyre noted that Bieber has already collected 11 No. 1s on the Pop Airplay chart and is currently tied with Rihanna, Katy Perry and Maroon 5 for the third-most chart-toppers of all time. If “Yukon” swaps places with “I Just Might” in the coming weeks, Bieber would match Mars’s record of 12 Pop Airplay No. 1 hits.
The chart update arrives as the singer remains a frequent talking point in pop culture, following recent Britpop News coverage of Justin Bieber showing off a fresh back tattoo at the Grammys.
While “Yukon” has yet to reach the top, the near-miss underscores Bieber’s continued radio presence more than half a year into the single’s run, and sets up a closely watched battle for the No. 1 spot in the weeks ahead.
