The 23-year-old South African pop star hit the stage Friday night in a green vintage balconette bra from Dolce & Gabbana’s Spring 2001 collection, paired with denim shorts featuring beaded fringe and silver safety pins. Fans were quick to draw comparisons to Britney Spears’ iconic “I’m a Slave 4 U” look from the 2001 MTV VMAs, calling the resemblance striking.
But Tyla shut down the speculation. “Love her but I just thought the outfit was fly… no inspo,” she posted on X.
Still, social media users aren’t buying it. Comments poured in, with some accusing her of copying. “Do you not know what inspo means?” one person asked, while another added, “Girl you a fraud get out of here.” Others suggested her stylist must have taken notes from Britney’s legendary outfit — even if Tyla wasn’t aware.
Britney’s original look included a jeweled green bra, low-rise jean shorts with a butterfly accent, and the unforgettable yellow python draped over her shoulders. The outfit was created by costume designers Kurt and Bart and remains one of pop culture’s most memorable fashion moments.
Interestingly, this isn’t Tyla’s first time turning heads with a retro pop reference. At the 2024 MTV EMAs in Manchester, she wore a tiger-print Roberto Cavalli dress from 2000 — the same design Aaliyah wore to the VMAs that year.
