Bobby Brown was not a fan of Britney Spears’ cover of his 1988 hit “My Prerogative,” and he didn’t hold back when sharing his thoughts.
During a discussion on the “Club Shay Shay” podcast with Shannon Sharpe, Brown bluntly said, “Britney Spears butchered ‘My Prerogative.’ I couldn’t take it.”
He added that Teddy Riley had produced the original version and called Spears’ cover a “butchering.” Despite his strong criticism, Brown explained that he cleared the cover because it was Britney Spears, but admitted that he was disappointed by the result.
Brown mentioned that he learned a valuable lesson, saying, “I gotta hear it [to clear it] because you don’t know what these kids will say these days.”
Fans of Britney Spears, however, defended her version, with some even claiming it was superior to the original. They took to social media to voice their opinions, while others poked fun at Brown’s harsh comments, suggesting that he was using Spears’ cover to stay relevant.
Spears released the cover in 2004, during her marriage to Kevin Federline, and it was included on her compilation album “Greatest Hits: My Prerogative.” The song, produced by the Swedish duo Bloodshy & Avant, was one of three new tracks on the album.
Despite the criticism, the cover remains popular among many of Spears’ fans, who continue to champion her take on the classic tune.
