William and Kate Plan New Kensington Palace Security
Prince William and the Princess of Wales are set to see new security measures installed near their London home at Kensington Palace, as plans are drawn up to address safety concerns around the royal residence. Although the couple moved to Windsor in 2022, they continue to retain Apartment 1A as their base in the capital when official duties require them to be in London.
Hello Magazine reported that the Crown Estate is seeking planning permission to install temporary vehicle barriers outside the palace and is also looking at longer-term “hostile vehicle mitigation” measures, amid claims the existing security is outdated.
The report said the property has already been undergoing changes in recent months, including restoration work on the palace’s golden gates. The Prince and Princess of Wales moved into Apartment 1A in 2013, a 20-room residence that serves as their city base, having previously lived at Nottingham Cottage and, later, Anmer Hall in Norfolk.
The security update comes during a period of focus on the protection arrangements for senior royals, and follows recent public attention on the Prince of Wales’s duties, including Prince William’s emotional week after candid remarks as he continued his programme of engagements.
While security for working royals is funded under long-established arrangements, the latest planning move underlines how royal residences continue to adapt to evolving threats, even when homes are used as occasional bases rather than primary family addresses.
