Amber Rose says she fuelled Kanye’s 2009 VMAs moment
Ms Amber Rose has said she played a part in Kanye West’s notorious interruption of Ms Taylor Swift at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, describing how she encouraged him to drink and “hyped” him up ahead of the ceremony. The comments revisit one of pop culture’s most infamous awards-show incidents and renew attention on West’s long-running public feud with Swift.
Speaking on a podcast this week, Ms Rose recalled telling West they should be “taking shots” on the red carpet and said the plan “backfired” when he later went on stage, Page Six reported.
Rose, now 42, said she did not agree with how West handled the moment but argued he believed his message was right. She also said she has spoken with Swift since the incident and that there is no bad blood between them.
The episode at the 2009 VMAs occurred when Swift, then 19, was accepting the Best Female Video award and West interrupted her to praise Ms Beyoncé’s video instead. The moment quickly became a defining flashpoint in celebrity culture, with the tension between West and Swift resurfacing in various ways over the years.
Rose dated West from 2008 to 2010. In the years since, West has gone on to marry and divorce Ms Kim Kardashian and later married Ms Bianca Censori, while Rose has spoken publicly about several of her past relationships and family life.
