King Charles Apologises For Late Bermuda Visit
King Charles apologised to Bermudians during a reception at Government House in Hamilton, telling guests he was sorry it had taken so long for a reigning monarch to visit the British Overseas Territory. The remarks came as the King continues a three-day trip to the island following his recent US state visit.
During the garden party toast, Hello Magazine reported that the 77-year-old said it was the first time in Bermuda’s 400-year history that the islands had received a reigning King, adding: “I am terribly sorry it has taken so long!”
The King also described Bermuda and the Overseas Territories as “a most cherished and important member of the British family,” referencing the island’s nickname “the Rock” as he praised the strength of the relationship with the UK. While Bermuda is not a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, it is a British Overseas Territory and participates in some Commonwealth activities through its association with Britain.
His Bermuda schedule follows earlier reporting that the Palace confirmed the King’s next move would include major engagements on the island, with the monarch expected to focus on security, science and youth programmes during the visit.
According to the report, Charles is due to officially launch the UK Space Agency’s Project Nova, intended to help track space debris, and tour a new observatory site where he will be briefed on a planned global network of telescopes. He is also expected to open the new Great Bay Coast Guard Station, view unmanned underwater and aerial vehicles used by the Royal Bermuda Regiment’s Coast Guard, and meet young people from the Junior Leader programme before awarding operational service medals to five members of the regiment.
