Vienna Suspect Admits Taylor Swift Attack Plot
A 21-year-old Austrian man has admitted in court to plotting a jihadist attack targeting a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna in August 2024, prosecutors said, as the case returned to public attention in a trial at Wiener Neustadt near the Austrian capital.
BBC News reported that the state prosecutor told the court police found an “almost completed bomb” during a search of the man’s home, after he was arrested following a tip-off from the CIA on the eve of Swift’s opening Vienna date.
The defendant, named in court as Beran A, also admitted being part of a terrorist organisation but denied other charges, including alleged involvement in planning an attack in Mecca, according to the report. A second 21-year-old, named as Arda K, is also on trial accused of being part of an Islamic State cell, with both men facing terrorism-related charges.
The prosecution alleges the plan led to the cancellation of three sold-out shows at Vienna’s Ernst Happel Stadium, where about 195,000 people were expected to attend. In previous Britpop News coverage of Swift’s public life, she has recently been the subject of intense speculation around upcoming personal plans, but the Vienna case has refocused attention on the security risks surrounding major tours.
The trial is expected to continue until late May, with the court hearing allegations that the accused sought bomb-making instructions online and attempted to obtain weapons, while defence lawyers urged the judges to consider the case beyond its headlines.
