Matthew McConaughey Thanks Beckham for MLS Boost
Matthew McConaughey has publicly thanked David Beckham for helping raise the profile of football in the United States, as Inter Miami opened its new Nu Stadium in Miami. The actor posted an open letter on X ahead of Inter Miami’s match against Austin FC, using the occasion to praise Beckham’s impact on Major League Soccer as the club marked the milestone with fans and co-owners.
Daily Mail reported that McConaughey titled his post “Mr Beckham young man” and wrote that Beckham “supercharged” football in the US, crediting his LA Galaxy move with giving MLS “fresh legitimacy” and turning matches into major events.
The report said Beckham, as Inter Miami co-owner and president, addressed supporters alongside co-owners Mr Jorge Mas and Mr Jose Mas and told the crowd: “We believed in Miami. And Miami believed in us.” It also said Lionel Messi scored Inter Miami’s first-ever goal at the new ground during a 2-2 draw, with Luis Suarez levelling late after Austin’s Jayden Nelson had put the visitors back in front.
The stadium opening adds to Beckham’s expanding profile in the US sporting landscape, coming amid wider attention on his stateside business interests and high-level appearances including when he skipped a White House visit that had sparked discussion about his diary and priorities.
Daily Mail added that while the stadium itself was reported to cost around $350 million, the wider Miami Freedom Park campus is projected at about $1 billion, with plans including a hotel, retail village, public parkland and community pitches, as Inter Miami completes its long-planned move into its namesake city.
