Thomas Markle Says He Feels ‘Blessed’ After Amputation
Thomas Markle, the father of Meghan Markle, has spoken about his recovery after a recent health crisis in the Philippines, saying he has found comfort in a new relationship following surgery that left him with a below-the-knee amputation. The 81-year-old, a retired Hollywood lighting director, described feeling “blessed” as he continues to recover.
Daily Record reported that Mr Markle met 46-year-old nurse Rio Canedo while recovering at a rehabilitation centre in Cebu last December after doctors removed his left leg below the knee.
According to the report, Mr Markle said a serious blood clot led to four days in intensive care before medics carried out the life-saving procedure. He also told The Mail on Sunday that Ms Canedo helped him follow a strict no-sugar diet and encouraged him to drink more water as he recovered, adding that although he is battling pneumonia he feels he is “in good hands”.
Mr Markle’s comments follow earlier updates about his health, including his recovery after the amputation, as he has continued to speak publicly about the distance in his relationship with the Duchess of Sussex and his hopes of focusing on a quieter life.
In the latest remarks, Mr Markle said he has accepted that some things “can’t be fixed” and that, for now, he and Ms Canedo are simply enjoying life together, with marriage not yet discussed. He added that every day with her feels like “a blessing” as he concentrates on his health and the support around him.
