Meghan Markle ‘wrote to King Charles’ over claims of different royal rules, report says
Meghan Markle reportedly wrote to King Charles in a bid to address tensions privately after she and Prince Harry stepped back as working royals and relocated to the United States. The claim centres on questions about how the couple’s post-royal agreement was applied compared with other members of the family, amid continued public interest in the Sussexes’ relationship with the monarchy.
In its report, Express said a royal commentator alleged the Duchess of Sussex sent the King a letter seeking answers on why “different rules” applied to her and the Duke of Sussex than to other royals, after the pair were told they could not use their HRH styles for commercial gain.
The article cites royal expert Mr Neil Sean, who claimed Meghan also wanted a one-to-one meeting to explain “the problems she’s encountered” since joining the Royal Family. It also repeats an allegation that Meghan compared her situation with Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, who has continued to use her title publicly while promoting her work, and questioned why the arrangements appeared different.
The report also revisits a separate controversy from last year involving a photo shared by podcaster Ms Jamie Kern Lima which appeared to show a gift basket card reading: “With Compliments of HRH The Duchess of Sussex”, prompting renewed scrutiny of the agreement surrounding the Sussexes’ titles. The issue comes as Meghan’s potential UK return remains under discussion, including claims about whether she would require armed security in the UK.
Buckingham Palace has not publicly commented on the alleged letter, and neither the Duke nor Duchess of Sussex has confirmed the claims. The report nonetheless highlights how the couple’s exit terms and the use of royal titles continue to generate debate years after their departure from official duties.
