Thomas Markle criticises Prince Harry in statement about Meghan’s first marriage
Thomas Markle has issued fresh criticism of Prince Harry in remarks centred on Meghan Markle’s first marriage, adding to the long-running public estrangement between Meghan and her father. The comments were reported on Sunday, as attention remains on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s relationship with both sides of the family.
In the statement, Express reported that Mr Markle said Meghan should never have ended her marriage to film producer Trevor Engelson, who she married in 2011 and divorced in 2014, and claimed he “really liked” Engelson and did not understand why the relationship ended.
Mr Markle also told the outlet he believed Engelson “never understood” the split, while the report revisited claims about how unexpected the separation was said to have felt to Engelson. Meghan later met Prince Harry in 2016 and married him in 2018, after which she became estranged from her father.
Mr Markle has never met Prince Harry or his grandchildren, and Meghan has remained publicly distant from him since 2018, though the report said she reached out after he required emergency surgery last year. Separate Britpop News reporting has previously noted the Duke’s recent public-profile interactions, including claims that he reportedly ‘warned’ Brooklyn Beckham to hold back during a high-profile encounter.
The latest remarks are likely to renew scrutiny of the Sussexes’ family dynamics, particularly as Prince Harry continues to draw attention for his public statements and ongoing disputes involving privacy and media intrusion.
