The Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle isn’t planning to see her estranged father again and reports suggest she has given up hope of ever reconciling with him via The Telegraph.
Thomas Markle is in a hospital in Cebu, the Philippines, where he is recovering from an operation to amputate his leg, and was handed a letter written by the Duchess last week.
She has not phoned him, reportedly fearing that a call could be overheard, and an email sent to him was not thought to have been seen. In the letter, she is said to have outlined her feelings about his decision to give several media interviews about their relationship.
Thomas Markle is currently recuperating from a stay in intensive care after having had his leg amputated below the knee during surgery to remove a blood clot.
Speaking from the hospital, Mr. Markle told The Mail on Sunday: “I don’t want to die estranged from Meghan. I want to meet my grandkids and Harry.”
However, the Duchess reportedly has no faith that their relationship will be repaired, and has even deleted his number. The pair have not spoken since 2018, when Mr. Markle worked with a paparazzi photographer near his home in Mexico to stage photographs of him being fitted for a suit ahead of the Royal wedding.
Following the learning of his surgery on December 3rd, she is said to have attempted to email her father, using an address he no longer accesses, before replicating the same message via letter.
Since arriving in hospital, Mr. Markle claimed to be “confused” by reports that the Duchess had attempted to make contact, insisting he had not changed his number and had received no messages, The Mail on Sunday reported.
A spokesman for the Duchess previously said: “Given that a Daily Mail reporter has remained at her father’s bedside throughout, broadcasting each interaction and breaching clear ethical boundaries, it has been exceedingly difficult for the Duchess to contact her father privately, despite her efforts over the past several days.
“With the support of reliable and trusted contacts, her correspondence is now safely in his hands.”
Before their estrangement, Mr Markle had been close to his daughter, caring for her in Los Angeles after he and her mother, Doria Ragland, divorced when the Duchess was six.
